Disney is amazing! I’ve made lots of memories there with my family. But nothing lasts forever! Here are the 5 Disney rides I miss the most.
Disney Rides I Missed The Most…
The Great Movie Ride
My mom and I absolutely loved this ride. It was interactive, nostalgic, and fun! If you had never ridden this ride, it is set up as a guided tour through famous movie sets. You have a live person as your tour guide who “drives” your tram. You visited movies including the Wizard of Oz, Indiana Jones, Alien, and Singing in the Rain. This ride was replaced by Runaway Railway which is largely animated (no animatronics). Honestly, the new ride was pretty disappointing for me but I am sure the kids love it!
Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride
This ride essentially simulated being a passenger of a drunk driver (Mr. Toad), so I can see why Disney decided to get rid of it. It was replaced by The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, which is actually really cute and fun!
Maelstrom
This ride was BOMB. It was in Epcot, in Norway. It was a Viking and boat themed ride (with a few trolls). Part of this ride even went backward! It was really fun and whimsical. It was replaced with the Frozen Ride. I haven’t ridden it yet, as the line is always really long (not a surprise). I’m sure it’s cute but I will always miss Maelstrom!
Ellen’s Energy Adventure
This ride/show was AMAZING. It starts with a short film where Ellen dreams she is on Jeopardy and is failing all of the questions related to energy! Bill Nye comes along to tutor her. Then you board your ride vehicle and set off through several scenes full of fun dinosaur animatronics (and Ellen fighting a few of them off!).
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
This is one I never got to ride! It was closed in 1994. It was based on the 1954 Disney film. Guests rode in a submarine vehicle and viewed marine creatures and divers from the boat. You see the City of Atlantis, a sea monster, and some mermaids. Finally, just like in the film, you are attacked by a giant squid! After this ride closed, it was turned into just an open pool with King Triton, and has since been removed for the Seven Dwarves Mine Train ride. While the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ride no longer exists in Disney World in Orlando, you can ride a similar (and more awesome looking) ride at DisneySea in Tokyo.
Runner Ups:
Test Track (the original)
This ride is based on the tests a car might go through before production. You go through heat tests, cold tests, rough road tests, and it all ends with a super-fast ride around a track at 65 mph (which feels even faster when you’re exposed to the air!). In 2012, the ride was refurbished to appear virtual. For example, instead of swerving around a faux pine tree, you swerve around a laser/virtual projection of a tree. In my opinion, the virtual version is just not as fun!
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids playground
Back in the 90s Disney’s MGM Studios had a Honey I Shrunk the Kids themed playground where everything was huge, as if you were shrunk down! It featured a huge dog nose, playdoh tubs, cheerios, and an ant.
Rides I don’t miss:
Stitch’s Great Escape
This ride took the place of ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter. Long story short, you would sit in a seat that gets separated from everyone, Stitch escapes his little jail capsule (which you may remember from the movie) and he’s running around the ride. He farts and burps a lot and it was STINKY. The ride was then turned into Monster Inc Laugh Floor, but is currently closed and some suspect it will be turned into another ride.
