Should You Rent DVC Points for Your Next Disney Trip?

I recently had a client ask me about renting DVC (Disney Vacation Club) points to book their accommodations. Disney Vacation Club is Disney’s timeshare company. You can be an owner, or you can rent points from owners. This can be done directly from an owner or a third-party website. Typically, using DVC points can allow you to stay at a larger accommodation for a cheaper price. You also enjoy all the benefits of staying at an on-site Disney resort and free resort parking ($15-25/day).

So what could go wrong? I’ll share some of the downsides of renting DVC points.

1. Difficult to cancel or change

Typically you can’t cancel DVC rental points. Booking Disney direct has a pretty great cancellation and change policy! There were also many complaints about how some third-party DVC point rental companies handled refunds when Disney shut down during COVID. If the DVC points are refundable, it typically requires purchasing additional points or a separate insurance policy which may not cover all situations. Even then, typically only a portion of the cost is refunded.

2. The DVC owner can cancel your reservation last minute

Even if booked through a third-party website, the DVC owner can cancel your reservation at the last minute! Your specific resort preferences and travel dates may no longer be available through Disney directly.

3. You can’t contact Disney directly regarding your reservation

Even though your name will be listed on the reservation, you have no rights to contact Disney directly. This means that you are dependent on the DVC owner to add anything to your reservation, such as dining plans (if they return).

4. Limited availability

Your preferred DVC accommodation may not be available when you need to book, so you have to hope it becomes available for your trip!

5. No discounts or special offers

Booking using DVC points means you are not eligible for any special discounts or offers from Disney to be added to your trip.

6. Reduced housekeeping

DVC rooms have a reduced housekeeping service. If you stay less 8 days, you get trash and towel service on day 4.

7. Payment due in full at booking

For a package booked with Disney, only $200 is required at the time of booking and final payment is not due until 30 days from check-in! With DVC points, you must pay the full amount at booking.

After reading, if you’ve decided not to rent DVC points for your next trip, reach out to me for a quote! It’s FREE! If you do decide to rent DVC points for your upcoming trip, or are a DVC owner, I can still help you purchase your park tickets! I can also offer you planning services for a fee.
